Evan's Eyes

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

If I may vent for a moment (and how are you going to stop me?), but am I the only one in this country that can be QUIET in a movie theater? There's nothing wrong with laughing at the funny parts (or screaming at the scary parts), but I didn't pay admission to listen to crying children, constant coughing, or people of any age TALKING. Sure, when I go see "Jungle Book 2," I'll be mellowed on a pint of Southern Comfort and I'll EXPECT to hear chirpy voices narrating every action or asking "Why doesn't the monkey have PANTS?" Kids are a given. But what sort of parent thinks "Poor little Suzy has the sniffles and hacking cough, we better take her to a movie!"? And adults that speak every thought in their head loudly enough to hear rows away! "Oh, they're in a flying car!" Yes, we know, because we're watching the SAME MOVIE! Only I don't say that out loud, because I'm capable of not vocalizing my every thought. Which is fortunate for many people who have been in grocery-store lines in front of me.

Odds are that you're going to enjoy this movie about as much as you enjoyed the first Harry Potter film, unless you just read "Chamber of Secrets" and hate it when any story elements are changed to accommodate a screenplay. If you haven't seen the first one or read any of the books, don't watch this one until you do. Without the background, you won't understand the significance of Harry's awkward first sexual encounter, which has a surprising amount of nudity for a PG film.

If you liked the movies below, you'll probably like this one (and visa versa):

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  • Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  • Labyrinth
  • The Princess Bride
